* * *Zivildienst is community service done as an alternative to compulsory military service or Wehrdienst. Anyone seeking exemption from military service must present his case at a special hearing. Zivildienst is mainly carried out in the social services sector, where Zivis - as those doing community work are known - are generally welcomed, since they are an inexpensive and well-motivated workforce.
